Guidelines for junior android developers or some tips to learn right now

Nov 15, 2017

Android software development is a huge and incomprehensible sphere. We gathered together a few guidelines for beginners. The earlier you take them into account the better you do.

From the first steps, pay attention to the performance

Here’s an example. Imagine, your app starts requesting more memory all of a sudden. If there is not enough memory on the app, the system closes other running programs to ensure correct performance of your app.

One more example. You’ve downloaded a movie and would like to watch it on the road. You think the battery should be enough for 4  hours, however, the phone switches off at the most intriguing moment because the video player has consumed all the resources.

Conclusion: don’t make users and other apps suffer, just spend the battery, CPU, GPU, and operation memory correctly.

Don’t allow memory leaks

A memory leak, literally speaking, is when you allocate operation memory for a specific object and don’t know when it becomes out of date. As a result, the stack is overdone and the app comes down.

It’s a very serious problem. Its importance changes as long as time and intensity of user’s experience with the app increases.

Some useful tips:

  • Don’t ever save links for Context, Activity, View, Fragment, Service in static variables;
  • Be careful while forwarding links to Activity, View, Fragment, Service and other objects;
  • Don’t ever save links on Fragment Activity.

Create side threads

To improve the app performance, to ensure a good response, and to avoid a common mistake ANP (the app doesn’t respond), you should separate internal architecture. This allows not to overload the main thread working by default.

Use strings.xml

Developers generally cannot immediately understand that they should treat the text as a string resource. However, using this approach, it’s easy to transfer all the apps into another programming language. Strings.xml allows storing all the necessary strings in one place and requests them through id. Study this technology as soon as possible, in the beginning, you may find it a waste of time and that to hardcore is easier. In reality, it optimizes the development process.

Set Grade by default

To achieve automatic integration, you should choose Gradle. It’s a tool actively developed by Google. It is officially considered to be the main system in this context. It allows managing dependencies, using the structure of catalogs and supports incremental integration.

Sit down and study programming patterns

Instead of inventing bicycles, use tested models for a fast and elegant ride. In this regards, you should study the samples of development.

Learn Kotlin

This year, Kotlin has been announced an official language for Android development. It’s good for entire support, community growth, and assistance that helps raise the language popularity. Don’t hype and learn it instead of Java, however, you should learn it together with Java. What’s even better is when you feel at least a bit free with Java. Find the time to read a comparative overview of the two languages.

Use complex approach in learning

To get some good knowledge, you should learn a well-structured information. Read books, watch video tutorials, communicate on StackOverflow, read articles. The first thing to do is to realize a “skeleton” for all your knowledge to live on.

The best way is to find a professional course at the online University. Unlike regular courses, you’ll have a personal tutor who will help you understand the most complicated issues for the beginners. In addition, this type of learning is project oriented. It means you will create real apps while doing the course. A similar approach is used in leading educational centers in the USA. A year of education is equal to a year of development experience.
